Blenheim-Erieau this Evening

Nothing new to report actually, but if one does not get out, one does not find anything!
I stopped at Blenehim Lagoons first and noted lots of shorebirds around the first pond and the sprinkler cells.  The back sprinklers are pretty good even though there are lots of weeds. One never knows what is lurking about!

There were over 100 shorebirds.  Lots of Greater Yellowlegs, Least, etc.  Two Bairds Sandpipers were along the first pond.

About three Wilson's Snipe were probing around the sprinkler cells.  The birds tonight were extremely skittish for some reason.  A kayak at Blenheim is not an option for approach!  As alluded to by Josh Vandermeulen in an earlier post, shorebirds seem to not mind a kayak or small canoe.  I found that out last year as well at Rondeau.
On Monday, another Josh, by the name of Bouman, was at Rondeau Bay and encountered some American Avocets.  There were actually three, and he got a stellar shot!  I took the liberty of posting it here, so thanks Josh Bouman!

I checked Erieau this evening.  Lots of gulls, Caspian Terns, and Double-crested Cormorants.  I saw one corm that was banded.  It had a red band with white letters on its left leg.  I will try to find out location of banding...it may have been in Wisconsin.
At least 75 Caspian Terns were on the Rondeau spit tonight.

!!!!!!!

I scoped the islands as well.  I could see quite well actually but could not pick out any Avocet.  The islands were carpeted with cormorants!  Must be a little one in there somewhere......

Some good birds are showing up, such as Snowy Egrets.  This weekend looks promising for good birding, although weather forecast are useless anymore.  It has completely changed since this morning!!

SNEG heading to Tilbury?

  1. I found a cormorant in a tree in Ottawa with a red band and 3 white letters: FRB on October 22, 2013.

I googled but couldn't find who was using the code either, so I sent the report to:

  2. Chip put me onto a fellow in Wisconsin. Cormorants with red band have been banded in Wisconsin in various years.
