Odds 'n Ends

Summer Azure

I took today off.  My original plan way back was to go to Point Pelee, but wasn't so sure on Sunday due to lack of things to look at.  I went anyway.
It was better than Sunday with some gulls/terns/shorebirds to view at the Tip.  Two Lesser black-backed Gulls mixed in, but a far cry from the number apparently there last week.  Sanderlings were at the Tip.

pick out the Lesser Black-backed!:

Very few butterflies again, but a few Buckeye were around , lots of Hackberry and one Tawny Emperor.

Several Giant Swallowtails were out.

Only skippers were Silver-spotted and Northern Broken-Dash.  I think this is a strongly marked one.

The only good bird on the way home was a Reid Bunting at Pelee Wings (sorry Marianne!).

Stopped at Tilbury S. L. this afternoon.  Pretty much what Ken Burrell listed on his  blog.  Two Stilt Sandpipers were new for the summer.

Checked out Stewart Wetland west of Wallaceburg again this afternoon.  This spot is actually really good for shorebirds right now. Better than Blenheim!  I will have to keep an eye open here each day on my way to work.  Just the usual stuff right now..Solitary Sandpipers, both Yellowlegs, Pectoral, Least....

  1. Blake, I was wondering if you could confirm that the Roberta Stewart area is at Langstaff and Pond Rd... I'm working on a shorebirding Google Map (http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=215071390295034379940.0004a84783d0759ae0dcd&msa=0) and this information would be invaluable.

  2. Stuart,

The Roberta Stewart Wetland is at MacDonald Park at the very west end of Langstaff Line where it meets the St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33). Not sure where you got Pond Rd.!

  3. Blake, is the lesser Black backed gull in the middle, about three gulls down from the water?

  4. Yes, I centred the photo on the gull. Too far away for my lens though!

  5. Looking at the wrong end of Langstaff on a map, I guess. Thanks for the info.

  6. Nice seeing you Blake! Don't say you're sorry. I'm glad you compared me with a cute bird like a bunting :-)
