Sun-Up=Sun Pillar

Another interesting sunrise this morning.  Similar to the one February 12 last winter.  I was not able to get into a good position this morning to photograph it as it was too late before I realized what was going on.
Atmospheric conditions create this effect.  Flat ice crystals in the air reflect the rising sunlight on cold mornings.

February 12, 2010:

  1. It is indeed caused by atmospheric effect, Blake:

Great pictures, as usual, even without birds in them!

  2. is that what it's called, A sun pillar I sent a fabulous photo to the weather network and was very disappointed because they didn't show it on the TV network. Boo Hoo.
