This evening I had the urge to go to Blenheim Lagoons. Weather was nice all day and pleasant this evening.
A good number of shorebirds was present. Ponds 1 and 2 have good edge, and the sprinklers are attracting lots of shorebirds. Pond 5 has an open area that attracted a few of the larger shorebirds. Lots of reeds there, and it seemed good for herons. In fact two Great Egrets were present. Not often we see them there, but I wish they were smaller white herons!
I did not bother with the camera today. Not much opportunity to use it anyway.
Solitary Sandpiper was present in good numbers. Pond 2 had perhaps 15 around the edges! I found 2 more in the sprinklers.
The sprinklers held mostly Semipalmated, Least and Lesser Yellowlegs. The Least were in the dry cell as the wet cell was apparently too deep for them. One sandpiper stood out which appeared to be a White-rumped. Early for one, but I could not make it into anything else! There were quite a few Pectoral as well. It is interesting to note the size difference in some of the Pectoral.
No dowitchers today!
I quite often do not check pond 5 as it is mostly vegetation, but there is an open area not too deep that attracted the larger shorebirds. There was a total of 7 Stilt Sandpipers there and a number of yellowlegs. The two Great Egrets were nice to see.
Very few duck, but pond 1 had two Redhead (another male in pond 3) that have been there all summer. Also the female Greater Scaup and a female Ring-necked which I had not noticed before. Some Ruddies there too of course.
Blenheim is certainly one of the better spots to check regularly. I wish I lived a little closer to it. It is too much to drive there during the week on a regular basis.
For butterflies, big numbers of Common Buckeye there. As well, quite a few Fiery Skippers.
Common Painted-Lady has certainly invaded southern Ontario recently. Hundreds everywhere!
