Leaping Around Lambton

It has been tough getting out recently as the crazy weather continues.  In between rain drops, I got up to Reid CA a couple of times, and today went up north Lambton this morning.  Weather was much better up that way, and will likely be tomorrow as well.  Even the sun was out shining through a thin layer of clouds!

Although hairstreaks did well this year, other things are sparse.  Not the best year for odes, and some other leps.

Lots of Banded Hairstreaks are still lingering.  The hemp dogbane is long gone, so they are nectaring on meadowsweet, milkweed, or Queen Anne's Lace.

Grey Commas are fairly regular at Reid.

I have been looking for Dukes' Skippers, but they are tough to find this year.  Yesterday I saw two flying in the usual area, but they did not co-operate and did not settle down.

In the old Reid "oxbow", I found a couple of Broad-winged Skippers.

Another sedge skipper had me overly cautious, but the more I look at the photos today, Dukes' was the only choice.

Odes are downright scarce if you discount Blue Dashers!  Some of the common species are obvious, but the rarer ones are few and far between.

Blue-fronted Dancer

This morning I headed up to north Lambton since the weather was supposed to be more reasonable up that way.  It was indeed, although the trails were very wet.

I started off at Ausable River Cut CA for a nice morning walk.  Nothing ususual to report though.

Twelve-spotted Skimmer

Next stop was L-Lake Trail and the NCC Forested Dunes trail.  Very wet, so I got soaked from the knees down!

Some Acadian Flycatchers (4) were singing, and a Cerulean Warbler was singing in a usual location.

Not much in the way of odes to report.

A third spot to walk was the Karner Blue Sanctuary in Port Franks.  I had a little more success there and found multiple Coral Hairstreaks.  One Butterfly Milkweed had nine on it at one point!

A number of other butterflies were present.

Delaware Skipper

Wild Indigo Duskywing

Dun

Northern Broken-Dash

An Orange Mint Moth caught my eye at one point.

Liatris plants are coming along, and both Cylindrical and Rough Blazing Star were getting ready to bloom.

I should have stayed up that way much longer, as farther south I ran into the rain.  I had plans to check along the Sydenham at Shetland, but pouring rain proved otherwise.😢😠

I did quite a bit of driving around in the rain this afternoon.  I stopped by the Sedge Wren spot, but even they were disgusted with the weather and were not singing.  Dickcissel still along Holt Line West.

Must be the weekend!👎

For the boatnerds, I finished a project this week that I have been working on steadily since May 26.  Always a sense of accomplishment and relief when you put in the final screw!
