More Local Scenes

As this nightmare continues, I have been staying fairly local just to get away from the house.  I go out in the mornings for a bit, then stick around home the rest of the day.

Late yesterday, I finally saw some different birds in the yard.  There had been nothing new for virtually weeks.  A Fox Sparrow showed up, then I caught sight of a Pine Warbler.

The warbler stuck around for some time.  It found some leftover suet (which is now gone!) which I had hanging out all winter.  Although a common bird, it was a nice way to finish the day.

The was also a couple of Yellow-rumped Warblers.

Today seemed rather quiet though, just the two butterbutts were different.

Yesterday at Peers Wetland some FOY birds appeared.  Included was a Sora lurking along the edge. I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time, but could not get a photo before it disappeared.

I am able to get into Reid CA north of here for some long walks through the woods.  Thankfully it is still open.  The other day, a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers greeted me at the gate!  I seem to get them fairly regularly at this CA anymore.

I have been looking at some forest floor plants in my walks.

Trout Lilly litters the floor everywhere, but there are some trilliums starting to pop up.

I found some Early Blue Cohosh at one spot.

This had me stumped (or skunked?) at first, but I think it is Skunk Cabbage.

There are some impressive or interesting trees in Reid.  Included are some large Black Walnut.

And others.

Shumard Oak ?

This Red Oak was interesting.  Not sure if it is one tree, but multiple trunks are sticking up to make one huge base.

This one hickory was interesting with a dead snag out of one side.

Lots of hickory (mainly Shagbark), but some Bitternut as well.

Reid has almost 3 km of Sydenham River shoreline, which is rather unique.

The yard and house are getting a good makeover lately, but I keep my eye out for things in the yard

  1. That is the weirdest squirrel that I have seen in my
entire life ! Does it live in your neighborhood ?
You should let your weekly newspaper know about it.
That would provide some visitors to pep up your
    dull days--not a bird--but who cares ! So funny !.

    1. It has been around here for some time. There is another one similar, but not quite as distinct.
