As usual, I headed down to Rondeau too early. Still dark when I got there! However, Lakeshore Road was littered with sparrows and thrushes as it usually is before dawn. Mostly White-throated Sparrows and Hermit Thrushes.
I started walking on south point trail as per usual first thing in the morning. Strangely, there were hardly any sparrows at this end of the park.
Birds of the day seemed to be American Robin and Pine Siskin. They were constantly flying over. Later on I stopped at the end of one of the bigger sloughs where it opened up and stood there for some time. Hundreds upon hundreds of robins and siskins were flying west. Lighting was horrible, so with other birds mixed in, who knows what went over. It was very windy and the roar of the waves made it difficult to hear things.
At another point I found a good mix of birds that included at least a dozen Eastern Bluebirds (many going over today), Purple Finches, more siskins, Yellow-rumped Warblers, kinglets and a Blue-headed Vireo. Again, lighting was horrible due to heavy clouds (must be the weekend!!).
Lots of Merlins and sharpies were around today keeping the small birds active.
Several Winter Wrens, a species that I can never get a good photo!
Farther north in the park I did find mega flocks of sparrows/juncos. Most seemed to be Chipping and at the end of the day I found a large group of Field Sparrows too.
A few Palm, Nashville, Black-throated Green Warblers and Blackpoll were amongst the butterbutts.
I noticed there were lots of Red-bellied Woodpeckers today.
The lake was somewhat active first thing, but quickly dropped off. Very few bonies again! Only one distant Common Loon was visible.
Many American Pipits today. One field near Ridgetown had many.
Nothing of note at the Ridgetown Lagoons. Hudsonian Godwit was not seen yesterday afternoon apparently.
Rondeau Bay had lots of ducks and Pied-billed Grebes. Seven Great Egrets are still hanging about at the head of the Bay.
Lots of gulls at or near Erieau. I looked for swallows and only saw three Tree Swallows beside the R/R trail.
Lots of these guys today!
Tomorrow looks like nicer weather, so we will see what transpires.....
