Weekend Washout

It must be the weekend.  Horrible weather!  Friday was nice, and I bet a million bucks Monday is nice too.  Strong easterly winds are the worst for around here.  There is no good place to go birding!  I went down to Rondeau anyway even though it was the worst possible wind for there on top of the pouring rain.
One thing positive, the cold front did bring in lots of birds.  Most were sparrows though.  Some areas were crawling with White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows and Juncos.  Some Song, Swamp and Chipping were mixed in.  Kinglets were everywhere as well.
Yellow-rumped Warblers were in good supply but only a few other species were present.  Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, and Blackpoll were in one's or two's. Nashvilles were fairly numerous.
A couple of Blue-headed Vireos were trying to sing in the rain.
Bald Eagles were on the move as I saw at least four different ones on South Point Trail.

The most notable bird of the day was an unmarked Trumpeter Swan swimming off south point.  I wonder if it is the same individual that was at Tilbury S. L. in mid summer?  It looked lost!
On Harrison Trail south near the maintenance area, there were lots of the same birds.  The road was just littered with sparrows!  Nothing unusual that I could see though.
The only photo of the day....

At Erieau there were lots of gulls.  I sat at the pier for over an hour.  What else to do in the rain?  Lots of activity, including one jaeger species way out on the lake.  Jaegers are a novelty around Rondeau.  They just don't come here (often)!  I have only seen one previous jaegerin the Rondeau area--a Parasitic flying over south point trail one sunny morning a few years ago.  It was a day that one did not expect a jaeger, but this one flew just over tree top level heading west.
Later, I started to walk McGeachy Pond dike, but the rain got heavy again.  Lots of the same birds, but add an Orange-crowned Warbler and an Osprey.
I also quickly checked out Blenheim S. L. as the rain lightened up.  Pond 1 is good now that there is a bit of water in it.  There were several species of the common shorebirds.  Another Osprey was circling overhead here.

Just before sunset yesterday, I checked out some areas north of Wallaceburg.  Some Palm Warblers and Yellow-rumped Warblers were in the McKeough Floodway.

  1. Blake,
Even with crappy weather and unfavorable winds, you fared well!
