PPNP: A Quick Visit

Maggie

I got down to Point Pelee for a few hours today. Wish I had more time as it was a good day for birds and butterflies.  A doctor's appt first thing this morning held me up, plus a family function later in the day shortened my visit.
I only checked out West Beach Trail from the V.C. to the Tip only.  There were tons of butterflies (mostly common) and several pockets of warblers.  I also saw an Osprey, which strangely was the first for the year for me!  A few years ago I went a whole year without seeing one!
Buckeyes were numerous again.  I estimated about 90 that I saw.  Of course there would be lots more around.
I turned up a couple of Little Yellows  as well.

Three Wild Indigo Duskywings caught my eye, but only one was able to pose for a photo.

Hackberry Emperors were common.  They like to alight on people, and today was no exception.  However, I could not take a photo of one on me!

Black and White Warbler

I was pleased with the number of birds around as well.  There were several pockets of warblers constituting about 15 species.  There were lots of Tennessee, Cape May, Redstart and Magnolia.  Highlights were Mourning and Hooded.

Hooded Warbler

I guess the Hooded is pretty good as we rarely see them in the fall.  I think I have only seen one at Rondeau ever in the fall, and it was late September a couple of years ago. It was probably a male as there was hint of a hood.

At the Tip were 10 Sanderlings and just about as many Least Sandpipers.

On the way home, I counted about 40 Great Egrets at Hillman bridge.

  1. I've only had Hooded Warbler once in the fall at Pelee ever. Sounds like a pretty fun day! We gotta get out together some time this fall :)

  2. Sorry to hear you will be heading back to work. Hopefully that doesn't mean fewer blog entries for me to read. Ha ha. I have not been able to get out much lately so I am living vicariously through your views.
