Butterflies and Dragonflies on Friday

I had some time this afternoon to spend looking for insects.  The weather was "perfect"  (must be a weekday!).  I checked out some familiar areas north of Wallaceburg, but in southern Lambton Co.

Edwards' Hairstreak

I was a bit surprised not to find a large number of hairstreak butterflies, but I did come up with five species.  I missed Striped, but I did look in appropriate habitat.  I do not know of any place in this area that has Acadian Hairstreak though.  Banded was the most common of course and I did find a few Edwards'.  Also one Coral, one Hickory and one Southern.  It took extensive searching to find a Southern (Northern Oak), and a second try.  It was a bit worn, with the blue spot virtually missing.

Other butterflies included more skippers.  I found a nice Peck's, Northern Broken Dash, Dun and Silver-spotted. Perhaps there was a Long Dash as well.

I got a nice photo of a Great Spangled Fritillary on Swamp Milkweed.

Along Bickford Line, I came across my first couple of Silvery Checkerspots for the year, but they were not keen on being photographed.
Dragonflies there included Pronghorn Clubtail, Calico Pennants, Dot-tailed Whiteface, among several other common species.

The Calico Pennants were certainly the most attractive.

  1. Great shots Blake,

I have seen some Great Spangled Fritillary butterflies in the last few weeks, but I always seem to see them after I've flushed them and they are flying swiftly away from me.

  2. They do flush easily! I find them hard to approach, but sometimes you can get close. When they do fly, they go quickly.
