As the Propeller Turns....
Finally a Saturday with full sun! With the wacky weather forecasts recently, you never know what you will get. I spent time along Lake Erie and went as far as Port Stanley today. There certainly were not many birds to be seen, but that it the way it has been all winter. It was just nice to get out.
I started at Erieau, but it was still mostly frozen. There is a very small open patch out in the Bay seen from the marsh trail. It had a number of ducks, but they were too far away to ascertain species. Some White-throated Sparrows were along the R/R track trail, as well as a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
At Rondeau Park, I just looked around the campground. Lots of Juncos and woodpeckers were around, but not much else. I did hear kinglets, a creeper and a White-throated Sparrow. A small flock of Red-winged Blackbirds flew over. Not sure if these are new arrivals, but there has been a large wintering flock around Blenheim, others here and there.
Checked out Port Glasgow, E. M. Warwick CA as well. Lots of Common Mergansers are on the lake and a few gulls.
Southeast of Fingal, I noted a Pileated Woodpecker flying over. Always neat to see.
At Port Stanley a good number of gulls were on the ice. I was foolishly and optimistically hoping that Black-tailed Gull was around.....
Most gulls there were Herring, but there was one Great Black-backed Gull, one second basic Glaucous Gull and a few Ring-billed Gulls.
Yesterday I checked out a bit of the St. Clair River late in the day. The water level has dropped even more due to an ice bridge at the mouth of Lake Huron. Lots of ducks are on the St. Clair in the open areas which I will check out tomorrow.
At noon yesterday, I walked on the ice at the marina. I could almost stand up under my boat!
