A Calm Day

Bee Fly (not sure of exact name) on West Beach Trail (s. of West Beach)

Today was one of those rare days it was almost dead calm. I checked out Point Pelee and saw a few birds and butterflies.
Firstly, I walked the main road from the VC to the Tip. Along the way I heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch which was the first fall migrant of the season of that species for me. Not like two or three years ago when they started the third week of June!
Shortly after that, I spotted a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.
At the Tip, there were a few birds in the last tree including Yellow Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, a Redstart (female) and a couple of imm. Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers.
At one point, a female Harrier flew out over the lake, but later came back. I caught sight of an Osprey heading out as well.
No shorebirds this time, except a lone Spotted Sandpiper.
Ducks included a couple of Red-breasted Mergansers and a male Lesser Scaup which came from the west, and kept heading east.
I then headed up West Beach Trail. At one point, a Tawny Emperor showed itself. It would not co-operate for a side view!

Skippers included a couple of Silver-spotted, and just south of the West Beach parking lot a single Northern Broken-Dash appeared.

Just up from the Tip Loop, I spotted a tattered Buckeye. They have only shown up recently. I had one north of Wallaceburg a couple of weeks ago, which was only the first one I had seen this year.

Common Buckeye

There were other common species of butterflies, including a good number of Giant Swallowtails.

Some dragonflies included this female Blue Dasher...

After getting home, I just relaxed on the back porch and watched for wildlife. Dragonflies included female Blue Dasher and female Autumn (or Yellow-legged) Meadowhawk. The Autumn Meadowhawk sat on the clothesline wire for almost two hours!
Butterflies included Azure, Cabbage White, and Red-spotted Purple.
