Soggy Sunday

Needless to say, there was not much in the way of birding on Sunday.  With the heavy rain, high wind and cool temps, birds were laying low and not singing.
I did go to Rondeau anyway for a couple of short walks in between the heavy rain.  The usual breeding birds were in place such as Prothonotary Warbler and Acadian Flycatcher.  The only migrant I saw was a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.
A Pine Warbler has been along Lakeshore Road, perhaps nesting.  I have had them in late June in the park as well.
The only thing to do yesterday was sit at Erieau and watch.  There was a fair bit of activity with a number of Bonaparte's Gulls.

Eventually, I spotted two immature Little Gulls come off Rondeau Bay.

I had three other single sightings of Little Gulls and one appeared to be slightly different than the first two.
Little Gulls were scarce earlier in May, but a few have finally shown up in our area.
I was hoping for a Laughing Gull or at least a Black-headed.  Seems that a number of people saw the Black-headed Gull at Wheatley on the weekend.

Shorebirds were absent except for one flyby Ruddy Turnstone.
The waves were really building up with the NE wind.

Rondeau taking another Beating!

A couple of fish tugs were out in the storm and came in.  It looked treacherous trying to steer those tugs in through the narrow rough channel.  I would imagine they had to put the throttle right to the kitchen to maintain steerage! ( I did not get out of the car to take a proper photo!).

There was one large white immature gull at the point on the Bay for a while.  I really could not get a handle on it, but probably a Glaucous.

Visiting Blenheim Lagoons was completely out of the question!
Looking for butterflies was not an option!

  1. It was a great day to stay inside! Good for you, though, in giving a couple of places a look over and at least getting a few things.

    1. I cannot stay inside despite the weather! At least there was activity at Erieau to watch from the car.
