More Bull....Frogs, Herons,...

It has been a slow week around here.  Things are winding down and the boats are all in.

Big news this week is Pipevine Swallowtail influx.  Down along Lake Erie many have been seen, and then some inland!  Steve Charbonneau reported hundreds at Erie Beach/Erieau on Monday.  Rather unprecedented!
Tuesday evening I toured around, stopping at ICI Ponds north of Sombra.  This is a little-checked spot that harbours heron types, nesting American Coots, etc.  Four Great Egrets were present, but very skittish.  One had a darker bill for some reason.  I could not get close though.

I then went one up to Dow Wetlands, another little-checked spot by birders.  It was getting late, but I walked around anyway.  I was interested in listening for Northern Bobwhite, as there were some back in the spring of 2003 when I worked for St. Clair Conservation.  We spent quite a bit of time up there on the Dow property planting trees.  On a couple of different occasions I heard Bobwhite.  Upland Sandpipers were plentiful as well.
No Bobwhite this evening.
It was nice to be outdoors on that job, but I hated driving the tractor all over the country!

A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was interesting.  I heard it but did not see it until I realized it was in flight.

I stopped at the pond north of here with all the Bull Frogs.  Still lots to be seen.

Not sure what I will do this weekend for birding. A few migrants must still be passing through.....
