Afternoon Outing

Got out this afternoon along the north branch of the Sydenham.  At Reid, some new broods of butterflies are out including Common Ringlet and Northern Crescent. Giant Swallowtails were flying as well.

Common Ringlet

Worn butterflies included an Edwards' Hairstreak and either a Banded or Hickory Hairstreak which flew before I got a good look.

Dion Skipper

Some worn Dion Skippers were still flying, but they were a bit camera shy.
In the slough, I did not see any Broad-winged Skippers, but the first Canada Darner was flying around.

Eastern Tailed-Blue (the smallest butterfly!)

I also checked out the river crossing at Moore WMA.  It is interesting just to watch dragonflies and butterflies.  A couple of Royal River Cruisers were patrolling the river.  They were impossible to photograph as they endlessly patrolled a small area of river. (I also saw another at Reid).

Lots of Northern Crescents were out.  A couple of American Snouts were flying, but they were also camera shy.  This area has some Hackberry trees, so Snout is not unusual here.

Down at McKellar Tract, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a White-eyed Vireo singing.  This is the first one I have ever had in the Wallaceburg area!
This is a good spot for dragonflies.  Among other species, Calico Pennant was flying.

  1. Blake,

Great posting! Have you been to the Hillman shorebird cell lately? I visited it a few weeks ago and well... I'm confused. I thought the field was flooded, but now, they have a drainage ditch so its dry. I was wondering if you knew what they were doing with it.
