Same Old, Same Old

bird tracks

It was a lazy weekend with very few birds to see. I went to Point Pelee on Saturday, but did not stay long. The park was essentially birdless! I saw far more birds in January. The only interesting time was at the Tip. There were quite a few ducks and a few gulls flying around. The only landbird was a female House Sparrow perched in the last tree! It sat there for a while, flew off, came back then flew off again. I later saw it at the Tip parking lot.

The most common duck was Common Merganser.

I was able to get a good look at things for about a half hour, then a fog rolled in. The fog stayed, so I went inland.
Up the east beach opposite Sparrow Field, some tracks were in the sand. Perhaps Killdeer? (see above photo) I have not seen a Killdeer yet this year though.

Birding was so bad, Richard Carr was searching for yard sales out in the onion fields. I don't think he found any.
Today, Sunday, I made a quick run out to the St. Clair River. Of course, nothing new, just like all winter. The American Coot had moved down to the Sombra ferry dock.
Even though it was a nice day, I had to spend most of the day resting, and fighting a bad cold.

Just to brighten things up, I will add a photo of a Gray Jay at Algonquin from last August.

  1. Nice Gray Jay! The birding is pretty scarce when you have to capture a House Sparrow. The next three months will bring better birding.

Great ID on the Hawk. I was betting on it being a Cooper's as well.

  2. Hey Blake, I meant to ask you...is there a Rondeau Checklist of Birds available at the visitor centre? I was looking on the Friends of Rondeau website hoping to order one online but they don't have it available. I haven't made my way into Rondeau for far too long but I'm hoping to pick up a list :)
