It was a quiet day for birds, but a noisy day for Olympic hockey fans. What a thrilling game! And a fitting way to end the 2010 Vancouver Olympics! As I write this, some people are going around town waving flags and honking their horns. Way to go Canada!!
I did get out for a while down at Rondeau this morning. The sun came out for a while, but there were virtually no birds to look at. It is still too wintery. Usually you would have some new Red-winged Blackbirds calling atop perches by now, but perhaps later this week they will make thier presence known.
Ice is disappearing and things are opening up. There are some open spots on Rondeau Bay with lots of waterfowl. The entrance to the Bay at Erieau has opened up and hundreds of ducks and a few gulls have moved in. At least they have come in.
No Bonaparte's Gulls yet, but others are around, including a Lesser Black-backed Gull. An adult was sleeping out on the ice. Much too far for a photo though.
Needless to say, Horned Larks are in big numbers right now. Flock after flock was along Kent Bridge Road this morning.
I did not check out Rondeau campground this morning, as it seems fewer and fewer birds have been there lately. Same old ones anyway. I was going to walk it, but the car got stuck in the snow! The snow was soggy enough that there was absolutely no traction once you got into the deeper parts. Took a while to get out.
Blake, great posting! That woodpecker hole looks like a pilleated no? I'd love a Pilleated. If one is around more in the spring, I would love to go to Rondeau and see it.

I too thought it may be a Pileated. It is a small one compared to others I have seen. Their holes tend to be rectangular (longer vertically), so they are easily recognized.
ReplyDeleteThey should be getting more active now.
