Christmas Birding
The weather is rotten today, but I went out to see what was around in preparation for the Wallaceburg CBC. I concentrated on the St. Clair River.
Along the Snye west of town, I found a Pied-billed Grebe with a couple of Mallards. It is not unusual to find a grebe on the Snye this time of year.
North of Port Lambton, I found the first raft of ducks--all Redhead. In fact, there were many rafts of Redhead to north of Sombra. They must have just come down, as they were not there a couple of days ago.
I saw only a couple of scaup amongst them, and one raft had at least three Canvasback.
At Cundick Park, I found the Common Loon that Steve reported on Tuesday farther down river.
Off Stoke's Point near the Loon, the Quebecois was anchored waiting out the storm.
A male Hooded Merganser was in Sombra Bay along with some Bufflehead. Lots of Mute Swans are around, needless to say, but a few Tundra were in Sombra Bay. At least a dozen of those were mixed in. I also found a few more out in a field off Holt Line.
Looks like another gull-less winter around here unless something drastic happens. Some years we have lots of gulls especially when there is ice. Last year there was hardly a gull on the river.
Things look better for Sunday when the Wallaceburg CBC takes place.
