Pelee on Thanksgiving Monday

I gave it another shot today, but there was not much to see in the way of birds and butterflies. Noteworthy were Pine Siskins flying overhead today.
I spent time at the Tip of Point Pelee first thing in the morning. A number of Bonaparte's Gulls were moving, but nothing different with them.

Mink rolling around at the Tip!

I saw an Osprey out on the lake heading toward Pelee Island. There were raptors moving today, especially a large number of Sharp-shinned Hawks.
The most abundant bird was Blue Jay. Well over a thousand could be seen while standing at the Tip.
A few Surf Scoters and Lesser Scaup were around. I saw only one Common Loon.
Walking the West Beach Trail, there were not many butterflies to be seen. Observers reported few yesterday as well. The butterflies do not stick around there!

another Common Buckeye

Fiery Skippers were still at the field outside the park.
I heard today that a Common Checkered Skipper was found on Sunday near Kingsville. So, there are more waiting to be found!

  2. I see Mink quite often out where I work. I work at a Marina, and they are always around the water's edge.
They are quite brave and will run right by you. I've even seen them run between people's legs!

  3. It's amazing to read how tame they are there! I've only ever seen one Mink here at Lake Wabukayne and it was trying to avoid people like the plague. Actually, with the way some people here are, can't say I blame the poor thing. LOL!

Muskrat here don't seem to be overly bothered by people, especially at Rattray Marsh.

btw - ever go ship spotting along the Welland Canal in St. Catharines?

  5. Jo-Anne,
I've been around boats all my life, and was interested in ships around the lakes from a young age. I didn't get into birding until about 1987!
You will notice I named the ship in my last post off Point Pelee, even though it was way out in the lake! I can ID most ships at least to some degree, just like birds!
I haven't been to the Welland in years though.

  6. Blake ... Very cool re: boats and ships! Like yourself, interested in ships from a young age but became a "Boatnerd" about 4 years ago and visit www.boatnerd.com daily! Last month, open house public tour aboard HMCS Charlottetown in Hamilton. Very interesting and informative!

My true love of birding started up 14 years ago thanks to an awesome experience at High Park in Toronto!

Unfortunately haven't been out birding for a few days due to fighting off a really wicked flu. Blah! :( Tuesday night's Full Moon didn't help matters! haha.
